Parents urged to check on prom limos
Parents are being advised to check on limousine operators to make sure that they are safe and legal before making a booking for their children’s school prom nights.
Stretched limousines must hold a licence as a passenger service vehicle – like buses and coaches – or be licensed by a local authority as a private hire vehicle, as taxis are. Without a licence, hiring out limousines is illegal.
Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said “VOSA will make full use of their powers to stop the small minority of cowboy operators who threaten to bring the industry into disrepute.”
VOSA has issued advice to schools and parents on how to check whether a company is licensed and will be carrying out spot-checks on limousines at prom nights throughout the country during May and June.
Contact your local council to find out if a company holds a private hire licence.
